Reflecting Light White Feather Chardonnay 2022

93 Points - Q Wine Reviews 16th August 2023

This Reflecting Light Chardonnay from the Macedon Ranges is a beautiful love story in a bottle. Chablis-esque, it's hard not to adore its shape and presence.

Ben Kimmorley has been the assistant winemaker at Curly Flat since 2008 and the fruit for this Chardonnay has been sourced from a property one kilometre south of his workplace.

This single label was inspired and dedicated to Ben's late wife Lisa, who passed from breast cancer in 2020. Lisa was the viticulturist at Curly Flat from 2009 to 2019. As Ben says, "She loved her job, photography (one of her photos and handwriting is on the label called White Feather) and she enjoyed a good Chardy at the end of the day. This is a cathartic project in regards to all those elements and to celebrate her memory by making a wine that I’d think she’d enjoy."

Taking a look at the wine and its presentation, you'd be certain Lisa would love it.

The fruit was whole bunch pressed and sent to six-year-old 500 litre French puncheons for 10 months. Chablis was Lisa's inspiration and the French influence in this wine is clear from the outset. Coming in at 13% alc, approximately 50% went through MLF.

Green apples, figs, almond meal and biscuity texture unfurl with ease. Some creaminess adds a sleek lick of vanilla. Raw cashews and lemon juice push slowly through the mouth drawing you closer with a minerally vibe keeping a neat tempo. There is just enough depth to grip onto yet the freshness has a dancy vibe. Grapefruit acidity and a citrusy tang produce a joyous and excitable finish calling you back for another sip time and again. It's a fabulous drink that is humbly priced. Buy one for $32 or buy more and reap the reward - six for $30 each or a dozen for $27. Winning!
